Where to start

Occupational therapy

Occupational therapists help people overcome a variety of physical problems so that they can live more independent lives. These problems may be due to injury or illness, or caused by psychological, emotional or developmental difficulties. If you’ve had an accident, occupational therapists can also help you develop new skills for daily living, as well as suggest changes to your environment that will make things easier. By working with these health professionals you may be able to maximise your living skills, become more productive and enjoy a better quality of life.

Typically treatment involves three stages. First your occupational therapist will evaluate your abilities and your environment, your lifestyle and family situation. Then they will consult with you and relevant family members to develop a suitable treatment plan. The third phase of treatment takes place at your home, your aged care home or in a hospital ward.

Occupational therapy in psychiatry

Occupational therapists work with other health professionals such as psychiatrists, psychologists and social workers to help older people develop better ways to deal with mental illness so they are able to manage day-to-day activities.

Where to find an occupational therapist

You can find an occupational therapist through most hospitals, rehabilitation units, your local community health centre, home care services or an Independent Living Centre (more information). You can also find one through the Australian Association of Occupational Therapists.
