Vaccinations are a preventative measure against catching a disease. The vaccinations we have as children wear off over the years. As we age our immune system is less able to cope with some common diseases such as influenza. This is why it is recommended that older people have an annual influenza vaccinations and a pneumococcal vaccination every five years. Younger adults in contact with children may also wish to renew their childhood vaccinations as a precaution, as many childhood illnesses can affect adults severely.
