Help with aged care homes

Common question

Question: I've never been keen on party games, spectator sports or group activities. Now I'm in the aged care home they are asking me join in the regular social activities like Bingo or watching football, but I am quite happy with my books and music. I have a couple of good friends and get on OK with the others at meals and when I go on some of the bus trips. Do I have to join in the activities?
Answer: You have the right to maintain your independence, make your own decisions, have your individual preferences taken into account and be treated with respect. Perhaps you could discuss your preferred recreational activities with the activities co-ordinator or the care manager so that a more inclusive program can be provided. The Charter of Residents' Rights outlines the rights and responsibilities of both residents and providers.
